Colloidal Silver and Sinus Infections
In this clinical study, titled "Colloidal Silver: A Novel Treatment for Staphylococcusaureus Biofilms", researchers wanted to determine whether or not colloidal silver would be useful as a treatment for bacterial bio-films that often cause "recalcitrant" (i.e., stubborn, chronic) sinus infections.

It's important to understand that bacterial bio-films are essentially a protective matrix that colonies of bacteria erect around themselves like a "fortress" in order to protect themselves from threats such as antibiotic drugs, or even from the immune system itself.

It's estimated that up to 80% of all infections involve bacterial biofilms, especially infections in the sinuses, urinary tract, gums, bones, as well as some heart and lung infections. And these bio-films are, in part, what are making some infections harder and harder to treat with conventional antibiotic drugs.

According to the study authors: "The aim of this study was to determine whether colloidal silver has any direct
bactericidal effects on these biofilms in vitro.…. After using this [colloidal silver] solution as a nasal spray, the symptoms of a previously recalcitrant Staphylococcus aureus-infected chronic rhinosinusitis patient were observed to have improved markedly."

In other words, a person suffering from stubborn chronic sinus infections caused by Staph bacteria that had formed bio-films inside the sinus cavity was treated with colloidal silver in the form of a nasal spray, and the sinus condition "improved markedly." The authors concluded, "Colloidal silver directly attenuates in vitro S. aureus
biofilms."
